5 Reasons You Should Be Playing Board Games
You may be asking yourself, “So, what’s so great about board games?” Or, “Aren’t board games the boring thing you do when you don’t know what else to do?” I can’t tell you the amount of funny looks I get when I tell people I have a regular board game night with other adults…and I’m designing a game. You can image the looks can’t you?
Hopefully this post will help answer the above questions and provide you with some great reasons to start playing. Here are my top 5 reasons for using board games to start the Table Age Revolution:
1) Board Games Create Space to Reclaim Relationships
Board games create a space to connect with family and friends around the table instead of in front of a screen. It’s an activity where you get to laugh, play, talk and be face-to-face with each other. We spend enough time facing a screen. Board games provide a positive outlet and fun alternative to the TV, tablet, and phone. Games are also great for parties or just about any gathering. Start reclaiming your relationships with a fun game!
2) Board Games Promote Teamwork and Sportsmanship
There are many different types of board games and one of my favorite types is cooperative games. Co-op games encourage you and your group to play together in order to win. If you’re playing with little kids, check out Peaceable Kingdom Games. We own several of their games and love them. For teenagers and adults, check out Pandemic or Forbidden Desert. If you’re going to save the world, you must work together. On the other end of the spectrum, board games teach children (and adults…hopefully) how to win and lose gracefully.
3) Board Games are Educational
You can learn a lot from board games. The Timeline games help you learn when historical events took place. Mice and Mystics is a cooperative game that has a reading element. Many other games have card text, which expands vocabulary and encourages reading. Sentinels of the Multiverse, Machi Koro and many others have players adding, subtracting and paying for things. Board games also teach critical thinking, planning ahead and strategy.
4) Board Games are Economical
Think about it. How much do you spend to go to the movies with your family and friends? If you have a family of 4 and the tickets cost $9 per person and you buy popcorn and a drink to share for $9, that’s $45 for an 1 ½ to 2 hours with your family looking at a screen. Many board games are around that price and take an hour or so to play. And you can play as many times as you want while connecting with each other.
5) Board Games are Super Fun
‘Nuff said! But, I’ll say more. There is a game or games out there for everyone. If you haven’t found one you like, keep looking or email me and maybe I can help. If you want to play a game in space, on a battlefield, be a superhero, a cook, a ninja, kill zombies, make burgers, brew beer, build a city, destroy a city, make movies, flick disks, or be in the old west, there is a game like that!
Ok, enough reading your screen. Go grab a game, gather your friends and get the Table Age revolution going. Stay connected through our awesome newsletter and pre-order Box Office Blowout!
