The Making of BARISTA BATTLE
The idea for Barista Battle came after seeing people playing games at various restaurants. At that moment I knew I wanted to design a small and portable game that you could take to a restaurant or coffee shop and play with your friends and family. I decided on coffee since it’s a relatively universal drink, and I love it. Over the next few weeks I wrote down a bunch of different customer and drink ideas. I also knew I wanted a simple dice rolling mechanism for players to serve the customers, so I was off and developing.
After play testing the game for a while and making several tweaks, I decided that Barista Battle would be a Christmas present to may family members. I made them the baristas in the game, which they loved. My brother and his wife have been playing the game for over a year and have told me that this is his most played game. They even enjoy playing it over their lunch break.
After another year of play testing and gaining feedback, I made a couple of changes. The biggest one was the customer deck. The customer deck used to have AM, NOON and PM customers. I merged the NOON customers in with the AM customers, so now the game has AM and PM customers. I originally had the AM and NOON customers split to steadily increase the difficulty. I decided to merge them to make set up easier and there wasn’t a big enough difference between these customers.
One of my favorite aspects of Barista Battle is that each die is a different ingredient and each die has a different ratio. I also love that its easy to set up, teach and play while enjoying coffee. I hope you enjoy Barista Battle as much as I do. You can pre-order it here. Barista Battle will ship at the end of February 2016.
