My Top 10 Games (part 2)

Here are my current top 5 games. Click here to checkout my top 6-10 games.

The Golden Ages is a civilization game that plays in an hour and half. For a civ game, that’s pretty amazing. During the game your civilization goes through four golden ages. Throughout the game you have various leaders who govern your people, discover new technologies, build great buildings and wonders, and possibly attack other civilizations. I enjoy playing through the history of the world and I love the mechanisms in this game. The one thing this game needs is better art. However, if you’re looking for an epic game that plays in a short time, go buy The Golden Ages.

Ok, Warhammer Quest is my favorite adventure card game. I’ve played a lot of Lord of the Rings: The Card Game and Pathfinder: The Adventure Card Game, and Warhammer Quest combines the best of both games. It takes the thematic adventuring of Lord of the Rings and the character evolving and dice rolling of Pathfinder and makes a superb game. The only downside is that there are only five scenarios in the campaign and only four characters to choose from. The rulebook is also a little confusing. However, once you get through the rulebook, the game is great. This is also a fun solo game.

Heroes Wanted is the most sarcastic tactical board game I’ve ever played. And, I’m a sucker for Superheroes. In this game you create a wannabe superhero like American Giraffe or Dino Rocket by matching up two cards together. Each of these cards grants you different abilities. The superheroes also receive a Quirk card, which gives your hero something random you must do throughout the game like stretch before you use your superpower or high five the people next to you when they defeat a minion. The main objective of the game changes depending on the scenario you choose. For instance you might have to stop the 800 lbs Clown from Littering, Loitering and Jaywalking. I really enjoy the hand management and satirical nature of Heroes Wanted.

Champions of Midgard is a Viking themed worker placement game with some dice rolling. The dice in this game represent your Viking warriors you are sending out to defend your village or send to distant lands to kill various monsters. The reason this game is so high on my list is because of the mechanisms, art and fun factor. I love placing my workers on the board to collect goods to prepare my hoard for a long journey to kill stuff. I love rolling custom dice, even though you could get hosed when you roll. I love all of the different ways to score points from acquiring certain cards, killing monsters and trolls, collecting sets of different monsters from various lands, building your own ship, having hidden end game cards, and stocking up on glory tokens. My brain is in the flow when I play this game. Go buy it!

Here’s my number one game...Pandemic Legacy! Many of you are probably familiar with Pandemic, which is a fun cooperative game. Pandemic Legacy takes Pandemic and exponentially makes it better. It adds a storyline, stickers, tokens and a whole bunch of other hidden stuff you unlock throughout the game. The coolest part is that the game changes and evolves as you play. You end up placing stickers on the board and your character sheets. You even have to destroy (i.e. rip up) certain cards. Pandemic Legacy is like playing through a season of a TV show. It’s also unlike most games, because when you finish playing 12-24 games you cannot play through it again. However, the experience and the amount of fun you’ll have in this game is well worth it. I cannot recommend this game enough.

Barista Battle and Our Family Values games are out now! You can buy one or both today.
